What Counts as Recreation and Parks Activities?

Recreation isn’t just sports or being outside, it’s any activity done for enjoyment! If it supports your overall wellbeing and you enjoy doing an activity, it counts. This could include:

Mental + Relaxation-Based Recreation

  • Sitting in a park and reading or journaling
  • Mindfulness, meditation, or breathing exercises outdoors
  • Birdwatching or nature observation
  • Stargazing or night sky viewing
  • Photography walks (nature, architecture, community life)
Creative Recreation

  • Sketching or painting
  • Crafts or DIY projects
  • Writing (poetry, stories, reflection journals)
  • Playing music
Everyday Movement That Counts

  • Gardening or community garden work
  • Walking the dog (or volunteering at a shelter walk)
  • Active commuting (walking/biking to work or errands)
  • Playing outside (tag, hide-and-seek, etc.)
  • Cleaning or organizing while being physically active
Spend Time Outdoors

  • Go tree planting
  • Picnics in parks (even solo)
  • Trail “micro-walks” (10–15 minute loops throughout the day)
  • Exploring different neighbourhood parks
  • Visiting waterfronts, viewpoints, or green spaces
  • Hiking a mountain or your local trail
  • Go on a bike ride
  • Look for butterflies
Social + Community Connection

  • Attending local markets or community festivals
  • Coffee walks with friends instead of sitting indoors
  • Joining a club meetup (walking groups, book clubs in parks)
  • Volunteering at community events or recreation programs
  • Watching or supporting local sports games
Exploration & Discovery

  • “Try a new park” challenges
  • Visiting recreation facilities or parks or open spaces you’ve never been to
  • Exploring public art installations or cultural spaces 
  • Self-guided walking tours of your community

75-Hour Recreation & Parks Challenge: Official Rules & Regulations

1. Contest Overview

The 75-Hour Recreation & Parks Challenge (the “Contest”) invites Albertans to celebrate the benefits of recreation and parks by spending time engaging in recreation and parks activities throughout the month of June.

Participants are challenged to complete 75 hours of recreation and parks activities between June 1 and June 30, 2026.

2. Eligibility

  • Open to residents of Alberta, Canada
  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of entry in order to win
  • Employees and representatives of the organizing organization, may be excluded from winning

3. Contest Period

  • The Contest begins on June 1, 2026 at 12:00 AM (MT)
  • The Contest closes on July 5, 2026 at 11:59 PM (MT)

Entries submitted outside of this period will not be eligible.

4. How to Enter

  • No purchase is necessary to enter or win
  • Participants must complete the online registration form
  • Participants are responsible for tracking their own recreation and parks activity hours
  • Hours must be submitted by July 5, 2026 to be eligible to win.

Activities may include (but are not limited to): walking, running, playing sports, reading outdoors, exploring nature, or participating in community recreation programs.

Participation is based on the honour system, and no formal verification of hours is required.

5. Prize

  • One (1) winner will receive a $500 prize package.
  • Prize details (including specific vendors) will be determined by the organizer
  • The prize must be accepted as awarded and is not transferable or redeemable for cash

6. Winner Selection

  • One (1) winner will be selected by random draw from all eligible entries
  • The draw will take place within approximately 7 days of the contest closing date
  • Odds of winning depend on the total number of eligible entries received

7. Skill-Testing Question

As required by Canadian law, the selected winner must correctly answer a time-limited skill-testing question before being declared the official winner.

8. Winner Notification

  • The selected entrant will be contacted via the contact information provided at registration
  • If the selected entrant cannot be reached within 5 business days, declines the prize, or fails to correctly answer the skill-testing question, another entrant may be selected

9. Privacy

By entering the Contest, participants consent to the collection and use of their personal information for the purposes of administering the Contest, including contacting the winner.

Personal information will be handled in accordance with applicable privacy laws and will not be used for other purposes without consent.

10. General Conditions

  • The organizer reserves the right to cancel, suspend, or modify the Contest at any time if necessary
  • The organizer reserves the right to disqualify any participant who is found to be tampering with the entry process or violating these rules
  • By participating, entrants agree to abide by these Official Rules and all decisions of the organizer, which are final

This Contest is not sponsored, endorsed, administered by, or associated with Instagram, Facebook, or any other social media platform.
