Program Leaders – Recreation Technician I

Opportunities are now available for those who have a passion for creating recreation and play opportunities for children in Edmonton, meeting new people, and working with the public. Join our energetic team that provides recreation opportunities across the City of Edmonton.
Registered Program Leaders work at City of Edmonton Recreation Centres implementing parented and non-parented physical activity programs, designed to encourage fundamental movement skill development for children 1-12 years of age. These seasonal programs designed to help children develop physical competence and self confidence include preschool programs, school-aged programs, school booking programs, and School Break Day Camps.
Recreation Program Leaders, such as an Active Living School Host, leads a week-long program for school groups in Kindergarten to Grade 6 to experience various physical activity opportunities in our Recreation Centres through the Active Living School Program. The leader will host a variety of activities for the group throughout the week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
What will you do?
– Lead preschool or children/youth in recreational activities such as volleyball, basketball, soccer, badminton, and/or obstacle courses
– Lead preschoolers in games, crafts and activities
– Ensure the safety of participants while ensuring classes are progressive, challenging and can adapt to varying levels of skills
– Deliver high quality, adaptable and inclusive programs for people of all abilities
– Promote development of fundamental movement skills, physical competence and self confidence
– Create a safe, positive and welcoming environment where participants can thrive while developing physically, cognitively and socially
– Promote the benefits of healthy living and physical activity
– Ability to use program materials and equipment safely
– Provide outstanding customer service to participants, families and patrons
– Create a positive workplace environment through respectful interactions with all recreation facility staff
– Maintain program statistics, such as attendance, evaluations and incident reports
– Attend training as required
– Other related duties as required
Qualifications:
– Completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalent
Assets:
– Experience leading recreation or sport based programming for children and youth
– Knowledge in High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development and Canadian Sport for Life Fundamentals
Skills required for success:
– Ability to lead, organize, instruct and supervise group activities
– Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with program users and staff
– Ability to teach progressive sport skill development for all ages and abilities
– Provide excellent customer service and the ability to handle difficult situations

Conditions of Employment:
– Possession of valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C Certification
– Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
Salary: $19.219 – $23.787 (Hourly)
