Sturgeon County is hiring up to five (5) temporary full-time (up to 17.5 weeks) Mower Operator IIs. The Mower Operator II operates equipment such as a 150-hoursepower tractor and a 15-foot rotary cutter to control grass and weeds on municipal land and road allowances. This role will also apply herbicides and perform other vegetation management and park maintenance duties when weather is unsuitable for mowing. This is a safety sensitive position as it operates various equipment on County worksites.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mowing and Herbicide Application Operations (90%)
Operates a 150-horsepower tractor and a 15-foot rotary cutter with or without an extension (sidearm) unit with herbicide application technology to mow grass and control weeds on municipal road allowances, and park reserves.
May be required to operate unit with an extension arm (side arm).
Applies herbicides in accordance with all applicable legislation.
Performs other vegetation management and park maintenance duties when weather is unsuitable for mowing including mechanical weed and grass trimming, weed hand pulling, trail grooming and grass seeding.
Records details of work performed, including materials used, equipment maintenance activities, weather conditions, and locations.
Cleans and maintains all related equipment and assist with servicing and repairs.
Other Related Duties (10%)
Performs other duties as assigned.
Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
Adheres to all of Sturgeon County’s policies, bylaws, procedures and processes, as well as align work to the Sturgeon County values.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
Current Industrial Pesticide Applicator certification or Authorized Assistant certification (or the ability to obtain).
National Safety Code Cargo Securement Knowledge Certification or the ability to obtain.
National Safety Code Orientation or the ability to obtain.
National Safety Code Pre-Trip & Cargo Securement Orientation & Evaluation or the ability to obtain.
National Safety Code Pre-Trip Knowledge or the ability to obtain.
Utility terrain vehicle training or ability to obtain.
WHMIS 2015 or ability to obtain.
Minimum Emergency First Aid certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
Valid class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
Defensive Driving course certificate, or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
Access to a reliable vehicle to travel to various work sites.
Mechanical knowledge and aptitude to repair and maintain tractors and other implements.
Familiarity with the Alberta Township Survey (ATS) System.
Experience in lawn care and property maintenance.
Experience with trailer hookup, cargo securement, and towing.
Experience operating a truck on gravel roadsides.
Ability to work in a team environment or independently.
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally and politely verbally with others.
Problem-solving skills to address day-to-day issues that may arise.
Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare written reports.
Asset:
Knowledge of pesticide application processes.
