Job Summary
The Director, People and Culture serves the mission of the YMCA of Lethbridge by providing strategic vision, planning, oversight, and continued development of Human Resources and Health and Safety. The main goals of this position are:
1. Provide visionary leadership to the People and Culture department, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability, to meet strategic and operational goals.
2. Ensure the successful development and execution of human resources and health and safety strategies to enhance the Association’s workforce, employee experience, and culture.
3. Monitor trends and analytics relevant to initiatives and services within the department to determine opportunities for growth in alignment with changing Association and community needs.

Nature & Scope
The Director, People and Culture will be responsible for the direction and oversight of the People and Culture department. The major responsibilities of this position are, but not limited to:
• Leadership and Strategic Planning
o Exemplify the YMCA of Lethbridge’s Core Values of caring, honesty, inclusiveness, respect, and responsibility.
o Collaborate with other departments, ensuring alignment of goals and objectives across the Association, timely communication and process updates, and committee engagement.
o Promote a positive, inclusive work environment, responding to escalated concerns and resolving issues in a timely manner and in accordance with Association policies and guidelines.
o Manage difficult employee cases, assessing the level of risk involved and determining and recommending appropriate actions and next steps to be reviewed by the CEO.
o Develop and support Health and safety programs and auditing across the Association.
o Be a YMCA ambassador and strategic leader by identifying and implementing practices and frameworks which centre diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
o Develop and maintain succession planning within the department.
o Disseminate Department specific and Association wide information through the Association efficiently and accurately.
o Ensure compliance with all HR legislation and Association policies and guidelines and advise leaders on interpretation and administration.
o Demonstrate a commitment to health and safety, incident management and emergency response.
o Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, providing considerable explanation, clarification, and tact on sensitive, complex, or controversial issues.
o Ensure the Associations Certificate of Recognition is upheld.
• Organizational and Department Management
o Lead by providing oversight and supervision to the People and Culture department, including training and development, performance management, and workforce planning in the areas of Human Resources and Health and Safety.
o Create department related policies and guidelines for leadership team approval, communicate to impacted stakeholders, and implement as required.
o Regularly carry out complex tasks requiring a high degree of mental concentration and the use of analytical methods and processes.
o Mentor and model best practices, setting high standards for excellence in execution.
o Solve fundamental problems and make appropriate decisions that serve as guides and directive to the entire Association.
o Consult with senior leadership on Association wide succession plans, organizational structure, compensation, and total remuneration, making recommendations where appropriate.
o Identify and evaluate risks to the Association’s people while implementing measures to mitigate risk.
o Lead and support the implementation of performance management including progressive discipline, internal investigations, and the performance review program.
o Attend all required YMCA trainings and recertifications.
• Financial Management and Philanthropic Involvement
o Champion and exemplify the Association’s dedication to philanthropy.
o Oversee the development of the Department’s annual budget including managing capital budgets, monitoring expenditures, ensuring compliance, accurately forecasting, investigating significant variances, and ensuring corrective measures are implemented.
o Assess Association’s human, capital, infrastructure and strategic readiness requirements in the department and make recommendations for investment.
• External Relations and Advocacy
o Be a YMCA ambassador and strategic leader in the community by developing partnerships and relationships through community groups, committee work, and outreach opportunities.
o Educate others on People and Culture initiatives and projects.
o Follow policies regarding confidentiality to safeguard data and information and handle sensitive information with a strong sense of ethics and confidentiality, in addition to other Association policies and guidelines and applicable regulatory requirements and legislation.
o Assess current community needs and identify recommendations, in alignment with the Association’s strategic plan, of where to focus growth efforts.
Physical/Special Demands
• There are no physical/special demands for this position
Qualifications and Experience
• Post-secondary education in Human Resources or equivalent
• Minimum of 5+ years of practical or lived experience is required
• Supervisory experience is required
• Intermediate to expert knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite programs is required
• Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation is considered an asset
• Investigations Training is considered an asset
• Professional Safety Designation considered an asset
• Previous non-profit experience is considered an asset
• Evidence of an acceptable Police Information Check and Child Intervention Check
• Three professional references are required
