As one of our Operator 1 – Parks you will help beautify our community by caring for the greenery, playground equipment, and pathways, so people can enjoy all the outdoors spaces and recreational activities that contribute to a thriving community. Every day you will work in public spaces performing physical tasks or operating different types of equipment depending on the season. During the growing season, tasks and equipment will be related to parks maintenance, such as planting flowers, weeding, operating lawn mowers or weed whackers. During the winter tasks and equipment will be related to snow removal on pathways and sidewalks, such as skid steers or small utility vehicles. You will also be responsible for some small mechanical tasks such as greasing or blade, oil or filter changes on lawn mowers or other small equipment. To thrive in this role, you must have a grade 12 or high school equivalency diploma, at least a class 5 driver’s license, an interest in horticulture, parks, or gardening and some mechanical aptitude.
The Town of Olds was established in 1905 and has a population of just under 10,000 people. The town has grown to encompass over 350 acres of green spaces/parks, sports fields, ball diamonds, playgrounds and over 20 km of paved and unpaved pathways. Each year approximately 120 flower planters add color and greenery to our community. In 2020, construction was completed on a major new sports fields project, the Rotary Athletic Park of Olds. This facility consists of 2 slow-pitch/softball diamonds, 2 baseball diamonds, 2 major league sized soccer pitches, 10 national level tournament horseshoe pits, batting cages, and 2.97 km of paved trails.
This is an entry level position that involves lots of physical tasks, so the ability to perform manual labour is essential. The ability to listen to detailed instructions and ask for clarification, and the ability to work with a team, are all traits needed to be successful in this role, as well as. An interest in horticulture, in serving the public and taking pride in the way the town looks so residents and visitors to our community can enjoy the outdoor spaces.
The wage range for this position is $27.81 – $31.53 per hour. Annual salary is based on a 40-hour work week. Rotational Stand-by, and some possible seasonal weekend shifts are required. This position includes health benefits and participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP).
