This award is presented in honour of Albert (Bert) Victor Pettigrew, a founding and charter member of the Alberta Recreation & Parks Association (ARPA). Known to many in Alberta and Western Canada as “Mr. Recreation” or the “Dean of Recreation,” Bert retired in October 1972 from the Edmonton Parks and Recreation Department after 26 years of devoted service to Edmonton citizens. In honour of his years of service to the people of Alberta and his profession, ARPA inaugurated the A.V. Pettigrew Award in 1972. This award recognizes communities or organizations that have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to enhancing the quality of life of citizens through recreation and parks initiatives.

The ARPA Awards and Scholarships Committee with representation from all aspects of the recreation and parks sector and across the province will select the award recipient. The committee will evaluate the nominations by rating:
Nominees must demonstrate tangible and measurable impact in improving the well-being, health, and happiness of citizens through their recreation and parks initiatives
Nominees should demonstrate a legacy of sustained service and dedication to the community, with a proven track record of ongoing contributions to recreation and parks over an extended period
Nominees must demonstrate the initiative’s role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals and communities in numerous ways. These initiatives provide opportunities for physical activity, social interaction, and mental well-being, contributing to overall health and happiness
The nominee must have implemented innovative and impactful recreation and parks initiatives that have significantly improved the quality of life for citizens within their community
