Special Projects Officers (x2)

Alberta Recreation & Parks Association (ARPA) is a provincial not for profit charitable organization dedicated to advancing the growth and development of recreation and parks services in Alberta.  The Association provides extensive educational and awareness opportunities, disseminates a broad range of information and acts as an independent voice of the recreation and parks in Alberta.

ARPA is seeking two Special Projects Officers for 16-week full-time positions that will assist with planning and coordination of several of ARPA’s programs and events. These positions would report to the Executive Director or a Program Manager and would work closely with several of ARPA’s staff. The following duties and responsibilities will be distributed upon selection of the two successful candidates:

Duties of the Positions:

Programs

• Curriculum Development – provide support in the transformation of this national certificate program for recreation and parks. Duties would include program, online systems and policy development as well as implementing a program launch and communications plan.

• Communications Development – support our capacity for communications including within our membership and program networks as well as on social media and mainstream media. Special project work could focus on the roll out of the 2024 June is Recreation and Parks Month promotions and the 2024 Awards program.

• Communities ChooseWell – support the 20th anniversary planning for the program including champion engagement campaigns, event planning, and capturing & disseminating community stories.
• Community Compass – provide support in the development of a library of samples, templates, and resources for employers related to equity, diversity and inclusion in the recruitment, hiring, and retention process.

Events

• 2024 ARPA Annual Conference, Trade Show and Annual General Meeting Support and Coordination – assist with pre-planning for this event and duties will include but not be limited to program development, volunteer coordination, sponsorship development and marketing. The Conference is taking place from October 24-26, 2024 at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

• 2025 Parks School – provide pre-planning support for this training event taking place in the Spring of 2025. Duties would include program development, volunteer coordination, sponsorship development and marketing.

• Curriculum design and development knowledge and experience
• effective marketing and public communications skills
• excellent event coordination and project management skills
• strong interpersonal and communication skills
• proven ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships
• high degree of administrative, organizational skills and resourcefulness
• strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Articulate, internet, email)
• independence, initiative and ability to work in a team environment

Salary and details

• current or recently graduated post-secondary student enrolled in Recreation, Physical Education, Education, Communications, Health Promotion, Digital Design, Business or a related degree

• $21/hour plus 4% vacation pay
• positions are a 4-month summer term
• Work can be done remotely or in our offices located in Edmonton
• Work week is 35 hours/week Monday to Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. Some evening and weekend work may be required
• all travel and ancillary expenses related to job duties will be covered
