Now is your chance to get a closer look, and to join the Parks and Roads team behind the beauty of this city. Labourers work in crews of all sizes, and are responsible for both general and area-specific labouring duties. So, what exactly could you be doing? Depending on the area you are assigned to, your duties may include:

• Sweep sidewalks and collect refuse in parks, playgrounds, streets and natural areas
• Landscape construction services
• Light to medium shovel work, including digging holes
• Service and monitor amenities in parks, such as fire pits, washrooms and pavilions
• Care for shrubs and flower beds, including watering, planting, weeding, mulching, pruning, cutting and clearings
• Clean vacant encampments across Edmonton, remove chemical and bio-hazardous waste, needles, and large volumes of debris and refuse from encampments
• Mow, seed and water grass
• Apply fertilizer and/or pesticides
• Load and unload materials from trucks
• Sports field turf care and maintenance, including mowing and line marking
• Assist with urban forestry, including tree maintenance, tree planting, stump grinding and nursery operations
• Grind, patch, pour, spread and level concrete
• Support the maintenance of asphalt roadways, including paving, crack sealing and manhole/pothole repairs
• Operate and take responsibility for the minor maintenance of equipment
• Operate light delivery vehicles transporting materials, supplies and pulling trailers
• Assist tradespeople in general building maintenance and construction
• Use of light hand and/or power tools
• Assist in the maintenance and inspection of wooden sidewalks, steps, fences, guardrails, playspaces, chain link fences, retaining walls, bridge structures and foundations
• Remove snow around bridges, sidewalks, stairways and approaches, and sand slippery sidewalks and crosswalks
• Other duties as required

Qualifications:

• Grade 10 or equivalent
• Ability to understand and perform oral and written instructions
• Ability to work alone and within a team
• Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position, including repetitive heavy manual labour, such as lifting up to 40 lbs, for extended periods of time and the use of simple hand/or power tools and light motor vehicles for long periods of time in various weather and environmental conditions
• Any experience in the above list of duties is considered an asset
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position. Successful candidates must provide a current 5 year driver’s abstract
• Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Respiratory
• Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
• Standard First Aid Certification is considered an asset

Up to 100 temporary full-time position for up to 9 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Sunday-Saturday, 24/7 coverage. Applicants may be required to work shift work, on short notice, holidays, and after hours and early morning shifts, as required to fulfill operational requirements

Note: Individuals unable to work the entire 2023 season may be considered for the Relief Labourer position at a lower salary grade. Relief Labourers may work up to a maximum of 18 weeks

IMPORTANT: This position is expected to start late May/early June 2023.

Salary:

Relief Labourer: $21.329 – $23.919 (Hourly)
Labourer I: $22.072 – $30.606 (Hourly)
