Salary: $2,690 to $3,675 per month

The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) is a provincial not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering healthy citizens, communities and environments and advancing the growth and development of the recreation and parks sector in Alberta. We provide information, programs, services and professional development to communities and our members.

ARPA is seeking two personable, resourceful, enthusiastic individuals to support our Communities ChooseWell program, which has engaged wellness champions, recreation sector staff and municipal governments in hundreds of Alberta communities since 2005 to increase their capacity to create programs, places, policies and partnerships that foster healthy eating and active living.


The Program Officers report to the Communities ChooseWell Program Manager and work as part of a team. One position will focus on strengthening our efforts to engage municipal governments in creating healthy communities and to support Primary Care Networks to develop their community engagement efforts. The other position will focus on developing and/or coordinating learning opportunities and resources for community wellness champions and, ideally, supporting program communications and marketing strategies. Program Officers will also support the broader work of the Communities ChooseWell program and Alberta Recreation and Parks Association. This may involve:

  • Presenting learning opportunities such as webinars, workshops, provincial symposia, and professional development sessions for key audiences
  • Developing and/or coordinating print and/or web-based tools and resources for key audiences
  • Liaising with and directly support local wellness champions and other key audiences, including those in Indigenous and rural communities
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with external organizations, partners and communities
  • Representing and promoting Communities ChooseWell and ARPA at tradeshows, conferences & events
  • Supporting other program and organizational activities as required, such as ARPA’s annual conference and charity golf tournament

Desired Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field such as health education or promotion, public health, nutrition, health marketing, kinesiology, recreation, communications, or similar is required
  • At least 1-2 years of experience related to the position is strongly preferred
  • Understanding of population health and community development
  • Experience working with municipal governments, primary care networks, the recreation sector, and/or Indigenous communities in a health promotion capacity is an asset
  • Experience with marketing/communications, ideally in a health context, is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently, with little supervision
  • Project and time management skills, and the ability to work on multiple concurrent projects
  • Strong computer skills including word processing, internet research, Gmail, and social media
  • Working knowledge of Alberta public health and recreation organizations and municipalities
  • Ability to accommodate occasional evening and weekend work and travel within Alberta required

$2,690 to $3,675 per month
