About the Role

The Aquatics Coordinator is a member of the Recreation team of Cougars Athletics and Recreation which supports internal and external stakeholders by being in integrity with the Recreation Promise pillars: providing a welcoming and inclusive place to play on campus, providing accessible and engaging activities, providing a clean and safe environment, and providing friendly and helpful customer service. The Aquatics Coordinator assists in the areas of staff development, Aquatic Centre operations and inclusive and contemporary aquatics and first aid programming, is responsible for creating memorable customer experiences throughout the Aquatics Centre and works collaboratively with the rest of the team to inspire healthy, active lifestyles through fun, student-led experiences.


Aquatics Centre Operations (50%)

  • Coordinate and assist with the day to day operations of the Aquatic Centre including staff scheduling, record keeping, water testing, chemical application, maintenance/cleaning, risk management, dealing with difficult customers and supervision of student staff
  • Work collaboratively with the Aquatics Supervisor to maximize customer experiences in the Aquatic Centre and assist in the development of systems, policies and procedures that foster participation, access, and enjoyment.
  • Assist with the inventory and life cycle of Aquatic Centre equipment
  • Facilitate a culture which resolves concerns and closes the feedback loop in a timely fashion in accordance with appropriate compliance, policies and procedures.
  • Models, encourages and demonstrates service excellence standards in the Aquatic Centre on a day to day basis. 

Program Development and Implementation (25%)

  • Coordinate the day to day and ongoing functions of all first aid programs including communication with instructors, participants and the Red Cross; program set-up in ActiveNet, inventory of materials and training supplies; scheduling and supervising instructors, etc.
  • Assist in the planning, development, coordination and management of all aquatics & first aid programs. 
  • Assist with determining benchmarking data for program evaluation and improvement. 

Staff Development (20%)

  • Assist in the hiring, training, and supervision of all student staff for the Aquatic Centre. 
  • Assist with the coaching and mentoring of all Aquatic Centre student staff and core competency development. 
  • Apply best practices and compliance in carrying out policies and procedures relative to human resource management (hours of work, OT, stat pay, etc.)
  • Support a work culture that attracts and retains a talented team.

Departmental, Divisional and Institutional Service and Planning (5%)

  • Support the development of innovative collaborative partnerships to advance the departmental, divisional and institutional strategic reach.
  • Advance and serve on department committees.
  • Shares feedback from customers to the management team to improve overall customer experience.
  • Assist with recommendations and implementation of modifications to the department’s strategic plan as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NLI, WSIT, and FAI Certifications
  • Relevant experience in a comparable university or similar recreation setting
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a diverse team.
  • Experience with ActiveNet or similar recreation registration and facility management software
  • Membership and active involvement in relevant professional organizations such as ARPA, NIRSA, CSEP and/or other higher education associations.
