DESCRIPTION:The Alberta Recreation & Parks Association is excited to invite you to a virtual screening of ARPA’s 2023 Elders’ Camp documentary titled: “Our Own Spirits Regained” over the lunch hour (12pm to 1pm) on February 14th. \n\n\n\nAs a free reconciliation-based educational opportunity\, this documentary shares the stories of various multi-nation Elders as they explore: 1) the importance of these camps for growing the capacity of Elders\, 2) the healing process of connecting to the land\, and 3) the power of recreation to lift the human spirit. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, Janet Naclia (ARPA Director of People & Programs) will discuss the creation and experience of these camps with organizational partner and co-organizer\, Adrian Goulet (Mahegun Tails Inc. and Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary) as well as a guest appearance from one of the Elders involved in the Elders’ Camp initiative. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s a sneak peak!

To honour and celebrate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation\, this session will feature five multi-nation Elders\, including Diane Meguinis (Tsuut’ina)\, Doreen Healy (Blackfoot)\, Linda & Darryl Brass (Midewiwin) and Karli Crowshoe (Blackfoot) who will kindly share their expertise on the significance of offering tobacco\, how to offer it properly\, and why it is used in smudge.  \n\n\n\nThis session has been generously sponsored by Communities ChooseWell and Alberta Blue Cross. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of ARPA’s September programming in honour and recognition of Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth & Reconciliation (September 30).

At ARPA\, we are both privileged and honoured to collaborate with Indigenous communities and partners in this capacity. These opportunities to uplift and work with Indigenous communities come from years of building relatives and meaningful relationships with leaders and champions from the community.
