Learn how culture and traditional ways are being embedded in all their work\, how Elders and youth are working together to ensure the transfer and preservation of Traditional Knowledge\, and how Edna and Cherilyn are fostering connection and wellness in their community. \n\n\n\nJessica will share some perspective and context on the concept of Indigenous Food Sovereignty\, and how Edna and Cherilyn’s initiative is contributing to Food Sovereignty in Kikino.

DESCRIPTION:Communities ChooseWell is excited to welcome our friends at Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society for a free webinar on March 7\, 2025 at 12:00PM – 1:00PM MST on Fostering Diverse Parks for Healthy Communities! \n\n\n\nResearch demonstrates that nature connections improve community building\, health and wellbeing\, and care for nature. However\, a majority of this academic literature in Canada focuses on white/Eurocentric perspectives. Further\, this academic knowledge is often seen as more valuable than traditional knowledge(s) and lived experience which fails to represent diverse perspectives and therefore fails to undertake inclusive outdoor recreation and conservation. \n\n\n\nIn order for equitable outdoor recreation and conservation to take place\, everyone must feel welcomed to form a connection with nature. Therefore\, our presentation will put forth recommendations for inclusion and accessibility from Fostering a Sense of Belonging in Canada’s Parks and Wilderness (Shah & Badaloo\, 2023)\, solutions which are driven by both research and a diversity of lived experiences\, to promote healthy living for all.

DESCRIPTION:It is widely understood that a high quality of life is essential to the economic wellbeing of a community and a key aspect of quality of life within a municipality’s controls is their recreation and parks programs and services.  The Alberta Recreation & Parks Association (ARPA)\, with the support of the Government of Alberta\, have developed a professional development workshop on Sport\, Physical Activity\, Recreation (SPAR) & Parks in Alberta for elected officials.   \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide Council members with an understanding of the national framework documents\, Framework for Recreation in Canada 2015 – Pathways to Wellbeing and Parks for All – An action Plan for Canada’s Parks Community and Common Vision for Increasing Physical Activity and Reducing Sedentary Living as well as the linkages to the Municipal Government Act and other applicable legislation. A significant portion of the day will be devoted to exploring practical examples that you can implement in your community. \n\n\n\nWe are very pleased to advise you that we have retained the services of the recently retired Mayor of Leduc\, Mr. Bob Young to deliver the recreation and parks course.  \n\n\n\nNote: Registration for this workshop is open to elected officials only. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!\n\n\n\n\nIf you are interested in learning more please email Caleb Boorse at cboorse@arpaonline.ca.

SUMMARY:Nutrition Month Story Spotlight Webinar: Land of Dreams Urban Farm & Community
DESCRIPTION:What does it look like when a farm becomes a meeting place between cultures\, generations\, and ways of knowing? In this story-based webinar\, regenerative urban farmer Rod Olson shares the journey behind Land of Dreams: a living farm and cultural space in Calgary where newcomers and Indigenous people grow food\, build relationships\, and heal together on shared land. Guided by Indigenous wisdom and built on the simple idea that you don’t have to be a farmer\, you just have to want to touch the soil and belong\, Rod will walk through the origin\, partnerships\, and honest lessons learned along the way. Whether you’re dreaming of a community farm\, working with the Indigenous community\, newcomers\, or looking for a model where land and people grow together\, this is a story about turning complexity into action. \n\n\n\nAbout the Founder\, Rod Olson: \n\n\n\nRod is the original Urban Farmer in Calgary\, is a founding farmer member of the YYC Growers Cooperative and mentors new farmers at the Land of Dreams community farm\, a project that combines welcoming newcomers\, building relationships with our Indigenous community and together regenerating a former construction site to increase biodiversity and grow culturally relevant food. He is passionate about local food and particularly food grown in healthy soil soil. He comes alive when he talks about the soil and its potential as a compelling\, living system to take us confidently into the future. As a Certified Nutrition farmer he utilizes regenerative practices building his own data on their impact for increasing water-holding capacity\, reversing climate change\, increasing biodiversity\, and increasing the nutrient quality and flavour of our food. He believes in the saying\, ‘we are what we eat’ and when you eat food grown with love that aligns with nature that food will be a source of healing. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for the webinar here!
