News Release: Awards banquet recognizes excellence in Alberta’s recreation and parks sector

Lake Louise, AB – The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) acknowledged ten award and scholarship recipients at its 2011 President’s Awards Banquet on October 29th, held in conjunction with the ARPA Annual Conference and Energize Workshop.

This years award recepients include:

A.V. Pettigrew Award - Village of Thorsby
Wild Rose Award - Rick Curtis
ARPA Merit Award - Heather Cowie
Parks Excellence Award - City of Calgary – Memorial Park
Excellence in Youth Development Award - Chinooks Edge School Division
Halladay Memorial Student Award - Sarah Howe (University of Alberta)
AABRD Legacy Award - Village Square Leisure Centre (Calgary)
AABRD Legacy Undergraduate Scholarship - Blake Goehring (University of Alberta)

 

“It is exciting to see these communities and individuals making strides in our field,” states Terry Welsh, ARPA President. “The growth of recreation and parks in Alberta is critical to maintaining and improving quality of life for us and for our children. Our recognition of the work that is being done will hopefully inspire others to follow in the footsteps of those who we have recognized this year and in the past. The ARPA President’s Awards Banquet is a chance for us to recognize the contribution of those people who have been, and will become, leaders in recreation and parks in Alberta.”

ARPA’s awards and scholarships are a celebration of the innovative and successful endeavours of Alberta’s recreation and parks sector. Award recipients are selected by the volunteer members of an Awards and Scholarships Committee. The committee’s selections are based nomination packages that are submitted to ARPA throughout the spring each year.

The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) is a provincial, not-for-profit, charitable organization made up of volunteers committed to building healthy citizens and communities in Alberta through recreation and parks.Serving Albertans since 1951, ARPA members include community and public recreation agencies, educators, corporate, elected members, volunteers, and student members.
