Position Title: Program Officer – Communities ChooseWell
Location: Percy Page Centre, Edmonton, AB
Start Date: December 1, 2017
End Date: March 31, 2020 with possibility of extension
Hours: 36.25 hours per week
Salary: $2,690 to $3,675 per month

The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) is a provincial not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the growth and development of the recreation and parks sector in Alberta and fostering healthy citizens, communities and environments. We provide information, programs, services and professional development to communities and our members.

ARPA is seeking an experienced, energetic, creative individual to support our Communities ChooseWell program, which has engaged over 300 communities across Alberta since 2005.


Reporting to the Program Manager – Communities ChooseWell, the Program Officer will:

  • Coordinate learning events such as webinars, workshops and conference sessions
  • Develop and support program marketing and communications strategies, including community engagement, social media and website development
  • Assist with program evaluation and reporting activities
  • Support administration of community grants
  • Develop and/or coordinate resources and support materials for participating communities
  • Liaise with and support community champions to advance healthy living in their communities
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with external organizations, partners and communities
  • Represent and promote Communities ChooseWell and ARPA at tradeshows, conferences & events
  • Support other program and organizational activities as required, such as ARPA’s annual conference


  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field such as health education or promotion, public health, nutrition, kinesiology, recreation, or similar is required
  • Understanding of population and public health and community development is required
  • Experience with program evaluation and marking/communications is strongly preferred
  • At least 1-2 years of experience related to the position is required
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Project and time management skills, and the ability to work on multiple concurrent projects
  • Ability to work effectively independently, with little supervision, and as part of a team
  • Strong computer skills (word processing, internet, email), including internet research, social media and website content management
  • Working knowledge of Alberta public health and recreation organizations/facilities and municipalities is an asset
  • Occasional evening and weekend work and travel within Alberta are required

$2,690 to $3,675 /month
