Continuous Professional Learning System (CPLS)
Overview
The ARPA Continuing Professional Learning System (CPLS) has been developed in response to a desire on the part of Alberta Recreation and Parks Association members to engage in an ongoing process of professional learning. This process will lead to enhanced competency in both general knowledge of current issues relevant to the field of recreation practice, and specific knowledge pertaining to specialties within the field.
A CPLS for Recreation Professionals in Alberta
ARPA does not claim professional status for its members. Nevertheless, recreation practitioners in Alberta have traditionally behaved in the manner of professionals in the public sense of the term.
Recreation practitioners are not certified, but there is a growing expectation that persons entering the field should have specified educational qualifications. There is no written Code of Conduct, but there are significant unwritten traditions governing the ways in which practitioners are expected to behave. There is no system of continuous professional learning, although there is strong recognition of the importance of ongoing professional development among practitioners.
The establishment of a formal Continuous Professional Learning System for ARPA members is a first step along the road to a more professional focus for recreation practitioners in the province. It also meets clearly articulated requests from the membership for enhanced professional development opportunities.
